Your first shoot day with MultiSyncer: from the card to “Wrap the day”

MultiSyncer Studio article · 5 min read

This is a checklist for your first shoot day. Before you leave, create the project and connect the drives. On set, insert the cards and watch them: the app copies, checks the copies and tells you which card is safe to format. At wrap, press “Wrap the day”: the day's footage is synced, and every drive gets an edit project, the day report and a handover note.

Before you leave

1

Create the project

On the “Offload” page press “New project setup”: cameras, crew, folders on the drives and copy settings. No time? “Straight to copying”, and fill in the setup later. How to fill it in: the guide “Project setup”.

2

Connect the drives

You need at least two drives: every copy is read back and checked by checksum, and one copy is not enough, since a drive can fail. In the “What goes where” table under the drives, tick which drive gets the proxies, the dailies and the reports. “Test the drives' speed” shows whether a cable or a port is slowing things down.

On set

3

Insert a card

The app recognises the card itself and offers to add it to the project. You can also drop the card folder into the window. Cards from different readers are copied at once. The app never deletes anything from cards and never formats them.

4

Watch the card

Every file is copied and checked by checksum, and the check is written to an MHL. The card shows when it will be free (“The card is free in…”) and then “The cards are free — they can be ejected”. When there are two verified copies on different drives, the app shows “Safe to format”. You format it yourself, in the camera.

5

Mark scenes and takes

Right during the copy you can enter a file's scene and take, mark it “Good: to the edit” or “No good” and add a comment: on the card, the “Files” button, then “✎” on the file. This goes into the reports and the edit project.

6

Watch the “Today” strip

The day's cameras and recorders, each with icons for its cards. A red icon means the card is not yet safe to format. Click a camera to see its cards.

7

Mark and eject the card

The app can put a mark right on the card instead of tape: the camera does not recognise a marked card and offers to format it. This is a test feature, Mac only for now.

  • First read and confirm the “Marking copied cards” page, then turn on “Mark copied cards” in the project setup, “Copying and folders” section.
  • After the check and two copies the card gets a “Mark and eject” button. macOS asks for the computer's password once.
  • Put a marked exFAT card straight into the camera, not into the Mac: the Mac mends the boot area itself and the mark is gone. The Mac cannot read a FAT32 card and offers to Initialize: press Ignore.
  • Windows offers to format a marked card: press Cancel, otherwise the files are erased.
  • To restore a card: Help → Marked cards → “Restore the card”. The mark does not touch the files on the card.
8

Look at “Footage”

After the copy the app checks the picture and the sound. Every issue can be played and marked “Fail” or “OK”. Offload progress is also shown on a phone by QR code, on the same Wi-Fi.

Press “Wrap the day”

The app does four things:

  1. syncs the whole day: all cameras and sound together, including the last card;
  2. puts an edit project on every copy drive, linked to the footage on that drive;
  3. makes the day report with the “Footage check” and “Synchronization” sections, and a handover note on how to open the project in the edit;
  4. records where each drive will be kept: a shelf, a box, with whom.
10

Check the result

You see “The day is wrapped”. If some clips are placed by file time, the app tells you how many: in the sequence they have a red label, so check their position. From here you can also “Open the day report”, “Open the handover note” and “Show the edit project”. If addresses are set in the setup, a mail with the day report opens.

What not to do

  • Do not format a card until it has two verified copies on different drives. A cloud folder does not count as a copy.
  • Do not forget to wrap the day again if you copied new cards after wrapping: the app reminds you that they are not in the edit project.

FAQ

Can I start without a project setup?

Yes: “Straight to copying”, and fill in the setup later. Cameras and recorders appear by themselves with the first card.

When can I take the card out of the reader?

The card shows when it will be free (“The card is free in…”) and then “The cards are free — they can be ejected”. You can format it when the app shows “Safe to format”: that takes two verified copies on different drives.

What if I copied more cards after “Wrap the day”?

The app reminds you that they are not in the edit project. Wrap the day again: a new version of the project appears, and the earlier versions stay.

Where is the edit project?

On every copy drive, linked to the footage on that drive. Next to it are the day report and a handover note on how to open it in the edit.
