Dead pixel on a camera: how to find it before the edit
A dead or stuck sensor pixel shows in the frame as a dot that does not change from frame to frame. It is easy to miss in the viewfinder, and online tests check screens, not cameras. MultiSyncer Studio checks every file you shot after the card is copied and shows where the stuck pixel is in the frame.
Why a dead pixel is found late
| Task | The usual check | MultiSyncer Studio |
|---|---|---|
| How it is checked | Online tests check screens, not cameras. To check a sensor you shoot a test and inspect the frames zoomed in. | The check runs by itself on every file shot, after the card is copied. |
| When it is found | Often already in the edit, when a reshoot is impossible. | On set, while you can still swap the camera or reshoot. |
| Where the pixel is | You search the whole frame by eye. | The “Show the stuck pixel” button shows where it is in the frame. |
| What else is in the frame | Other problems show up only on a full viewing. | It also finds black and frozen frames, a picture that breaks up, damaged frames, clipped highlights, a file that ends early; and sound problems. |
| How the editor finds out | From word of mouth on set, or on their own. | A marker on the timeline: a fail in red, undecided in yellow. And in the day report. |
How to find a dead pixel in MultiSyncer Studio
Turn on the check
In the project setup, “Footage” section. The picture and sound check then runs by itself after every card is copied, as the next stage on the card: “Picture, sound”.
Copy the cards
The app looks through the picture of every file. You do not need to shoot a separate test: the footage itself is checked.
Open “Footage”
All footage in one table: ISO, shutter, iris, white balance and lens of every clip. The “Issues” view shows only what was found. The “Show the stuck pixel” button shows where it is in the frame.
Decide and pass it to the edit
Mark it “Fail” or “OK”. A fail reaches the editing app as a red marker, and the result of the check goes into the day report. If a pixel appeared on the sensor, you see it while still on set and can swap the camera before the next takes.
