What dailies are and how to send the day's footage to the director and producer
Dailies are lightweight copies of the day's footage for the director and producer to watch: with the camera's colour, timecode, scene and take burned in. MultiSyncer Studio makes them right after the card's copies are checked, uploads them to the cloud and puts the link into the day report and the mail to the producer.
What dailies are
Dailies are lightweight copies of a shooting day's footage for viewing. The director, the producer and the client watch them: on a phone, in a browser, in the evening after the shoot. Unlike proxies, dailies are for viewing, not for editing, so they usually show the camera's colour (LUT) and burn-ins: timecode, camera, scene and take.
| Proxies | Dailies | |
|---|---|---|
| Who for | The editor | The director, producer, client |
| What for | Smooth editing on any computer | Watching the day's footage |
| Picture | Usually clean, like the original; LUT and burn-ins if you want | With the camera LUT, burn-ins and a watermark |
| Where they are watched | In an editing app | On a phone, in a browser, in the cloud |
What is missing when dailies are made by hand
| Task | The usual way | MultiSyncer Studio |
|---|---|---|
| When they are ready | In the evening or the next day: export, transcode, label. | Right after the card's copies are checked, in the same pass as the copy. |
| Burn-ins and LUT | Set up in an editing app for every export. | Once in the project setup: camera LUT, timecode, camera, angle, operator, scene and take, file name. |
| Sending | Upload to the cloud and send the link around by hand. | Upload to Yandex Disk, Google Drive or Dropbox; the link goes into the day report and the mail to the producer. |
| How long it will take | Unclear in advance. | The app shows the day's volume and the approximate upload time at the last speed. |
How to make and send dailies in MultiSyncer Studio
Turn on dailies
Project setup, “Proxies and dailies” section, “Make dailies” (for the director and the producer). By default dailies are made in H.264, 720.
Set up the picture
- Camera LUT: chosen for each camera in the setup (“Cameras and recorders”) and baked into the dailies picture;
- Burn-ins: timecode, camera, angle, operator, scene and take, file name;
- Watermark: as text or a picture (“Choose a picture…”).
Choose the cloud
In the same setup: where to send (Yandex Disk, Google Drive, Dropbox), what to send (dailies, recorder sound, proxies, reports) and the “Dailies folder in the cloud”. Signing in to the cloud is finished in the browser. The app shows how much there is today and roughly how many minutes the upload will take.
Copy the cards
Right after the copies are checked the app makes the dailies and uploads them to the cloud. There is nothing to start separately.
The link goes out by itself
The “Link to the dailies” goes into the day report and into the mail to the producer, which opens when you wrap the day. The director and producer watch the day's footage on a phone or in a browser.

A cloud is not a copy. Dailies, and even originals in the cloud, do not count as a copy for formatting: the app shows “Safe to format” based on drives only.
